CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Fight for Survival

Max ran through the corridors back to Favani. To his frustration, he realized he had ventured far into the ruins. He focused on his Spiritual Sense to find her. Her spirit was still; she was clearly still asleep. Then Max flared out his senses, trying to verify whether his ill feeling had been accurate.

He found it. Something was approaching. Something bad. It could only mean one thing: somehow the Outsiders had picked up their scent and followed them into the tomb.

Max pushed Spiritual Energy into his legs and lungs and blasted through the corridors with explosive speed, barely touching the floor, using [Tether] and [Telekinesis] to bounce himself off of walls at the corners.

Max was getting close to the large room with the destroyed golems and Favani when he heard chittering and a large, encroaching mass. He looked behind him into the dark corridor and enhanced his eyesight to penetrate the darkness.

A mass of black sludge came sloshing his way. All sorts of monstrosities were emerging and dissipating into it, as if the Tar wasn’t sure which forms it wanted to animate. But above them floated something fully formed and terrifying.

It was tall with eight arms hanging down loosely by its sides. It wore a white mask with a malicious grin spanning cheek to cheek.

Max could feel the sorcerer noticing him.

Great . . . Doing this without Maverick is gonna be just great.

A purple cloud of smoke billowed around Max. But he had expected this and held his breath. He blasted off and away from the miasma, using his Cultivation to enhance his speed. He got twenty yards away when a black fireball connected with the purple smoke and the corridor exploded, making everything tremor. Stone began to fall from the walls and ceiling.

I sure hope that woke Favani up.

Max sped through the corridors, setting off a local [Gravity Storm] here and there.

When he finally arrived at the large room, he noticed that the blue barrier was already turned off. That was good. It meant Favani was awake.

Max kicked off the ground and landed in front of her.

“Situation?” she asked immediately in a clipped tone.

“One sorcerer,” Max said between breaths. “Brought friends.”

“Cursed creatures,” she muttered.

“Can you fight?” Max asked. “Recovered enough?”

“And if I couldn’t?” Favani asked. “Where would we escape to?”

“Back to the surface?” Max asked.

“Absolutely not possible,” Favani said. “They’re a hive mind, you know. If we manage to get away from this sorcerer, you can be sure another will follow.”

Max brushed against Favani’s spirit in an attempt to gauge her strength. She sensed it, of course, and swatted him away.

“Rude,” Favani said.

“I need to be in the know.”

“We will perish here if we fight, Max,” Favani said solemnly.

“So what do we do?”

Favani was silent for a moment. Max immediately extended his Spiritual Senses. The Outsiders were getting close. They had a minute to spare, at best.

“Do you trust me, Max?” Favani asked suddenly.

“Kind of?”

“It is up to you to judge whether that is enough or not,” Favani said.
